It's basically a lot of 1cm square foam pieces (shaped a bit like big, grey foam french fries) the length of the depth of the case welded together in a way which keeps them held together, yet you can pluck out and remove any 1cm square section you like to create precisely shaped cavities. You can extract several together in a block to create larger cavities, trim the removed piece to a shorter length and re-insert to create cavities of limited depth too. Ingenious.
